Spamfiltering when Backup mail exchanger has been chosen

Hi

I have a scenario where some of my customers uses the Cpanel as a web and mail server, but I also have a need to use the mail part as a backup MX, so the Cpanel is the first mail server buffering/forwarding emails if/when the lower MX (customers mail server) is online.

So on a daily basis when the systems are running, the mail hits our Cpanel server and instantly it forwards the mail to the customer mail server.
What I need to happen is that the Cpanel acts as a Spamfilter server in this process, so if the mail is a spam mail, it will be held back and over time deleted or release by the customer or Admin.
As fare as I can see today is that when using Cpanel as backup MX it just forwards with no spam filtering. It of course works with the internal mailboxes.

So
1. Will the build-inn spamfilter filter mails for domains where the use Backup mail exchanger is chosen
2. if yes, am I able to find filtered mails and release them, and how?
2. If it is not working as a spamfilter for theese kind of mails, can it be done? (without risk for operation)

Hope someone can help making my Cpanel server a spamfilter relay server...

Hello :)

Are you attempting to use a specific SPAM appliance, or are you intended to configure this setup with SpamAssassin? Also, what method are you using to forward the emails?

Thank you.

I was planning to use SpamAssassin. I also looked at ASSP Deluxe for Cpanel, but they told me that it could not do what I wanted.
To forward email I configure the Cpaenl DNS setting to be Backup mail exchanger.

I am not aware of any native support for scanning email with SpamAssassin before it's forwarded to a remote mail server. I recommend opening a feature request or seeing if a third-party application such as MailScanner is useful to you.

Submit A Feature Request

Thank you.

Hi allanbak,

I opened a feature request to have this bug fixed, and I even found a fix. Here it is: SpamAssassin when CPanel is backup mail server (aka. secondary MX)

Please like it so that CPanel considers fixing this issue :)

cPanelMichael, is feature request the best way to have this bug fixed? This is really a misconfiguration in exim.conf which leads to those emails not being scanned :( When could we expect to have this bug fixed so that my changes in exim.conf are not overwritten?

Thanks!

You can preserve changes to the Exim configuration file by using the "Advanced Editor" in:

"WHM Home » Service Configuration » Exim Configuration Manager"

Thank you.

Dear cPanelMichael,

default_spam_scan_check is not editable in the advanced editor for some reason, so I had to fine-tune it a bit. I added a new comment in the feature request to help others :)

Any chance you can push this feature request so it makes it in a stable release? :)

Thanks!

I can't directly elevate the priority of a feature request. However, the more votes and feedback it receives from other users, the more likely it is to get implemented in the future.

Thank you.
