    However i tried putting it onto one of my other accounts and it did not work. Have all files uploaded and when i try to log in i get the folowing error occurring:

    Error opening ../data/default_pref
    Could not create initial preference file!
    ../data/ should be writable by user nobody
    Please contact your system administrator and report this error.

    u have to do exactly that, make that directory writable by apache.

    if you have ssh acces, go into the parent directory of "data" directory

    (so let's say you put squirrel in /home/USER/www/squirrel, go there and type

    chmod o+w data/

    then logind into squirrel, and see if the error message is gone

    if you don't have ssh acces, jost use a ftp client that can change permissions, and make that folder writable by others.

    jester.ro is correct. To add to his answer: You'll need to make the permissions for the folder and file writable by the 'the public', which is '666'. You can either do this via an ftp client or via cPanel file manager. Also, if you download the files from an installation, that's already had users, you may want to delelete all files within the 'data' directory except the default.prefs, since any others will contain some user information. You may want to consider uploading SM to your skel folder, since it will transfer those files into each new account.

    Squirrel mail Error opening ../data/default_pref

    Hello

    This is the error that was found when i opened squirrel mail.
    ==============================
    Error opening ../data/default_pref
    Could not create initial preference file!
    /home/<username>/.sqmaildata/ should be writable by user <username>
    Please contact your system administrator and report this error.
    ===============================

    Solutions :
    .try to check the dir /home/<username>/.sqmaildata/ for permissions and ownership, user must be able to write to the directory.
    changing to users home dir
    . chmod 755 or so to .sqmaildata
    . chown username:username .sqmaildata:D
    . try to log in thenlook for the .sqmaildata dir if it is regenerateed or not?:eek:

    this directory is used by squirrel mail to save the prefernces for useing for a particular user. This is created automaticaly when a user acces the squirrelmail. If the home dir is not wirtable or something the error occours. If still it occours please use
    Crude method/ (works) Last option :p
    ============
    mkdir /home/<username>/.sqmaildata/
    in the dir /home/<username>/.sqmaildata/
    . touch <username.pref>(for main user)
    for other users
    . touch <username>\@<domainname>.pref
    in all the .pref files paste this
    ++++++++++++++++++
    show_html_default=0
    sort=0
    javascript_on=0
    hililist=a:0:{}
    +++++++++++++++++++
    This above is related the user prefernces.

    Log out then log in again into Squirrel mail it'll work.:cool:
