What's the cheapest place to get a SSL cert? I've never had to get one but now I have some clients that want secure pages. I never dealt with SSL certs so I have no idea what to do. I know I can get one from thawte. Someone else told me I can just make one on my server rather than pay. Any clues?

So you do have to pay for it. There isn't one you can create right on the server?

I believe you can make a self-signed one, but urm... if you are doing proper hosting it doesn't look professional. I have mine with THAWTE.

Ev1servers.net offers SSL certs from Geotrust for $49
You can use the SSL on any server outside their network as well of course ;)

Yep but a $49 SSL is still cheaper when you add 8% of taxes than a $150 one directly from Geotrust.

    SSL Gotchas

You CAN create your own SSL certificate for free, but browsers have code that will make the user think the line isn't secure. Only certain recognized root SSL certificates will avoid the error. THAT is how verisign gets away with charging so much.

BTW, you ALSO need to have IP resolution for the SSL to work on multiple sites.
