startup problems

I've just installed cpanel. When I look at the services in whm the following are failed.

apache
bind
proftpd

If I try to start proftpd from a shell as root the following comes up:



named started ok Saved Changes to proftpd (enabled)
Attempting to restart proftpd
proftpd status proftpd dead but subsys locked

proftpd has failed, please contact the sysadmin.

also when I try to add an A record to bind I get:

IP=64.246.16.99 ndc: decode base64 secret: bad base64 encoding Add Complete

But it still comes up with an error when I load whm.

anybody any ideas?.
