Strange Quota Problem

I've searched and read a lot of quota threads, but haven't found anything like this. What do you quota gurus make of this:

I have a user account, let's call him fatuser. CPanel reports his disk usage at 114 MB. If I SSH in and look around /home/fatuser that's about what I come up with.

However, if I do du -sh /home/fatuser/* it reports 3.5 GB in public_html. CPanel backed up his account today, and it about brought the server to its knees, registering server loads over 20 due to gzip. The backup file was 3.5 GB:

/backup/cpbackup/daily/fatuser.tar.gz

But I only see a little over 100 MB in his public_html. Any idea what's up?

Is it possible that he has a script that is writing ownership as "nobody" in his folders? maybe one of those images gallerys?

Yes, you're exactly right. He has images galore and many are owned by "nobody." The kicker is that he had a 3.4 GB file in there owned by "nobody." And it had been there awhile.

If it's so common, how come cpanel didn't came up with a fix yet?

It's not broken. cPanel uses quotas that are part of the OS. They report what the user files are adding up to be. User "nobody" is not the same as your user.

I think it is broken, because unix system quota doesn't care about webhosting environment where apps like galary write to the filesystem as the web user. Cpanel, on the other hand, should care, and should supply a way to accurately count quota and not mislead it's users/admins with false quota listings.

No No ..I know what you are saying it's a pain in the ass .. i know. Problem is not the counting but the user. The php script through apache writes as "nobody". You can try running the php version of suExec and I think files write as the user name.
