    On one box in particular, when creating an account, it says "unable to create <user>" where <user> is the username used. This appears right after "<user> added" and stops things going any further.

    I've tracked this down in wwwacct to:
    if (!getpwnam($user)) {
            deaderror "Unable to add the user $user";
    Which seems to be checking if the user exists, obviously it's returning nothing, so it bails out.

    However, if I put the same code into a separate script, it DOES find the username, and also when trying to use the same username again, it detects it's already in use.

    Somehow after creating it, it's failing to find the user it's created. This only happens on this one machine, and I can't understand why.. because it DOES create the user, and I can use that code to verify so, but when it checks it after creation in wwwacct, it fails and bails out.

    I've tried putting a 10 second delay before the check, it still fails.

    Any suggestions at all?

    edit: I just tried another test and it worked, but then I tried 5 more times and it failed every time. :(
