When you create a subdomain with control panel are you specifying an A record for the subdomain?

    Thanks.

normally cpanel itself takes care of the A record. if you create a subdomain, the A-record is created automatically.

    Hello,

To be precise a CNAME entry is automatically created once you create a subdomain from cPanel. Say you have a domain abc.com and you add a subdomain as test. The entry in the domains db file will be as:

    test.abc.com. IN CNAME abc.com.

where abc.com already has a A record above.

So If I create a subdomain there should be an A name for it created automatically?

The subdomain does not have its own zone file,it is just an entry in the main domain's zone.
and therefore A record of the sub domain is of the main domain.
