Supporting a PostgreSQL version newer than 10 years old

PostgreSQL 9.2 was released in 2012 and is no longer supported (PostgreSQL: Versioning Policy).

CentOS 7 supports PostgreSQL 9.6, 10, 11, 12 and 13 (PostgreSQL: Linux downloads (Red Hat family)).

How can I run a supported version of PostgreSQL on WHM/cPanel?

Hey there! The page at PostgreSQL: Linux downloads (Red Hat family) is specifically using the PostGres repositories and not the CentOS repositories. So far, cPanel has only included support for the version of PostGres that is available directly from the operating system.

The official CentOS 7 repos still show version 9.2 as the latest supported version, so that's what we use:

Considering WHM doesn't seem to have extensive functionality when it comes to PostgreSQL anyway, is it safe to remove the WHM version and install and maintain a modern PostgreSQL version independently / outside of the cPanel installer? There is only 1 account on the server and we just want to be able to run PostgreSQL with PostGIS for our own application.

I believe - though I haven't tested - that cPanel will seamlessly work with newer versions since as far as I know no major changes were introduced in 9.6 for example.

@liebn0r - I don't have a good answer for that on my end. Since it isn't something we test, I don't have any official data. It would be best to set up a test environment and try it out to see if you run into any odd issues.

We do have PSQL 11 but its breaking cPanel Calendar Service jut to let you know. So... you can do it manually but... its pain

Thanks for answering. In my case, I have some websites that use PostgreSQL, but above version 11, I thought maybe installing a newer version of PostgreSQL alone on the server, I don't know to what extent this can interfere with the functioning of WHM. Or, as a last resort, migrate everything to MariaDB (which would also work).

A bit confused here as I understand it cPanel supports AlmaLinux 8 which does come with Postgres versions up to 13. Does that not imply support for it?

V9 was EOL some time ago

AlmaLinux does support it, but all the cPanel tools don't just yet. It's something we're working towards though for sure.
