[SOLVED]

:( Rookie mistake. Client has 2 servers with websites replicated on both of them ( sort of a mixed HA pair ) . The site with the error was on the other server, so I've been troubleshooting this on the wrong server.

The right server had mysql down.

Please do not link to your site, which appears to be working. If you are having the issue, please provide more details on whether you are just seeing this in cPanel > MySQL Databases area or where.

Of note, most times, the MySQL error log at /var/lib/mysql/hostname.err (where hostname is the server's fully qualified hostname) has the error message on restarts. So, simply restart MySQL, then tail the error log to see what it shows. Frequently, it will be a typo in /etc/my.cnf file or a setting there that is invalid causing the issue with MySQL.
