I have found a solution to the problem. Simply give mod_gzip plenty of space. We have given it a directory on the /backup partition where we have at least 5 gigs of space free. This has solved completely our problem. mod_gzip WILL DELETE the wrk files, however it needs room, if you use the root partition and don't have enough room there, once the partition fills up, then mod_gzip is not able to delete the wrk files and hangs.
Try it out and you will see, as I said all our servers were going down at least once or sometimes even twice a week because of this and now no problems after almost 2 weeks with this solution.
