    Hi..

Going through my error logs about the time the server stopped responding last night, I see a load of these:-

[Sat Jan 25 19:51:14 2003] [error] (24)Too many open files: accept: (client socket)
[Sat Jan 25 19:51:19 2003] [error] (24)Too many open files: accept: (client socket)
[Sat Jan 25 19:51:22 2003] [error] (24)Too many open files: accept: (client socket)
[Sat Jan 25 19:51:22 2003] [error] (24)Too many open files: accept: (client socket)
[Sat Jan 25 19:51:22 2003] [error] (24)Too many open files: accept: (client socket)
[Sat Jan 25 19:51:24 2003] [error] (24)Too many open files: accept: (client socket)
[Sat Jan 25 19:51:27 2003] [error] (24)Too many open files: accept: (client socket)

Is there anything i can do to stop this happening again? I have searched these forums but can not find any mention of this error anywhere.

    Thanks

Before your server takes a dive next time, run the following:

lsof -ni | grep http | grep EST

It will output all of the current open and established apache connections. Of course modify the command for ftp, etc. Once you find the source of the issue, firewall the offender out of the rig.
