The top and uptime commands reported 2 users, while 'w' showed details of only one user (me) i.e pac. So who was the other user.

This status was reported for nearly 5 minutes before top and uptime showed 1 user again.

Couldn't find any trace of the 2nd user through netstat or history commands. Any suggestions???

I've had this happen a couple times when my local client timed out a session and/or my local station went into sleep mode (disconnecting in either case) and then I quickly log back in with a new session. It seems to take my server a few minutes to realize that the initial connection was dropped and a new session started, resulting in it reporting 2 users. At least as far as I can tell, this is what's going on, and in fact both users seem to be me.

It is quite possible that it was a session error as you have explained. This was the first time for me though... ;) Thanks Verdon!

Well, I hope I'm right... it freaked me out so much the first time that I re-booted my server ;)
