how do you track the amount of downloads a file you uploaded has gotten??

You could use the webstats within cPanel, that will give you some stats for the popular files. I would suggest trying awstats first.

How About The Commerce Software

I don't know the answer to the question, which means I should probably shut up. Nevertheless, since I have a similar interest, I will query another option. Can programs like OSCommerce or Zen Cart (available under Fantastico) make a record of the number of downloads and the name of the person downloading? I am wondering whether one could put the file in some sort of on-line store where it sells for zero dollars, but use the commerce software to track the purchasers, even if they pay nothing.

This is something not related to cPanel. You may refer documents of OScommerce or Zen cart to find out the way to check statistics.
