Turn off or rename "error_log"

I have a situation where an error_log file is being created in a directory which contents can be viewed by my userbase. Basically along with there list of files they see "error_log" as a file as well. Is there a way to disable the auto-creation of an error_log file?

In the alternative, if I could somehow modify the name of the error_log (to something like error_log.txt) then I could hide the file based on the extention.

Any ideas/suggestions?

Regardless of the name of the file, you should be able to prevent public access by means of .htaccess settings.
