Unable to login to cPanel after changing user group

I have a username that was able to log into ssh and cPanel just fine.

However, in ssh it would not let me run "su" or "su -" for the user (it used to complain of a path not found error). So I added the user to the wheel group and presto, "su" works for the user now.

BUT....

Now I get an error message each time I log into ssh:
grep: /var/cpanel/users/username: Permission Denied

AND WORSE....

I can't log into cPanel anymore. Even when trying the root username and password.

I've tried resetting the password in WHM for the user in the hope this would reset the user's group settings as well, but no luck. I don't want to try deleting the user and recreating it in WHM because the domain associated with the user (i.e. /home/username/public_html) has a live site in it.

 Help would be appreciated. I can't understand what's wrong but can only trace it back to happening after I added the user to the wheel group. I can't get into cPanel and that is making administering the domain very difficult!

Thanks in advance.

You should not use the root username. Try using the account username with the root or reseller password.

The topic of your post suggests you changed the usergroup too, but you do not give any details of this action in your post itself. If you did change the user's group, you should change it back to what it was.
