Does anyone know of a way to see how many unopened emails a server has, listed by domain.

I'm worried that before i installed spam software my server may have alot of unopened mails scattered all over the place.

might be an idea i guess to stop using the catch all option.

This is not a really easy thing to do. The following command will give you the total number of emails in the catchall mailbox in the user account:

    egrep -c "^From " /home/*/mail/inbox | grep -v :0

This will not show you any output for mail boxes with no messaegs in them.

and this will give you the total number of emails in the user mailboxes:

    egrep -c "^From " /home/*/mail/*/*/inbox | grep -v :0

The command will only show you all messages in the box and will not differentiate between read and unread so you will need to examine the mail box to determain this. If you want to do this from the command line you can use either:

    mail -f /path/to/inbox

    or

    mutt -f /path/to/inbox

What do you mean by "unopened emails"?? Not downloaded? If that's what you mean, you can check for files in the "new" and "cur" directories on each account. I don't get why you think installing Spam software will be affected by "unopened" emails?? There's really no such notion as "unopened" on the server end - that's more something that applies to the mail reader used and isn't standard on the server end.

Catchall is kind of a bad idea. Useful sometimes I know, but will usually lead to greater amounts of spam over time.
