I to have the same problem, it won't extract with Winrar or Winzip
I had to install the windows version of Tar and use the command line to extract the home.tar.gz file.
Problem seemed to start when the home directory was made into a seperate tar file inside of the main backup file.

More then 3 years passed from the last post on this topic and the problem is still there.
Any suggestions on how to work around this problem?
Please don't suggest using Linux to unpack the file.

This thread encompasses 2 issues: 1) corrupt .tar.gz files, an issue that I understand has since been corrected; and 2) how to extract the contents of a .tar.gz file on Windows.

If you just need to extract a file, I recommend downloading a program like 7-zip for Windows which can extract .tar.gz files for you.

If you experience issues with corrupted files, have technical analysts take a look at your server.
