i have the latest exim installed
    RHEL 3
    mailscanner

lately, customers had problems sending to some domains(specially the ones located in china)
    examples:
    huixingtrade.com
    china-inse.com
    vip.sina.com

    the error is :
    Code:
This message was created automatically by mail delivery software.

A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its
recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed:

      xxxx@huixingtrade.com
        unrouteable mail domain "huixingtrade.com"

i reinstalled exim and tried all the scripts available and all the solutions provided in this forum and other forums.with no use.
the domain resolves from my server with no problems.

    any ideas please !

If you do a search on those domains on dnsreport.com you will see that the mail really is unrouteable. There's nothing you can do to fix someone else's mailserver.

What do you mean? china-inse.com and those you listed cannot accept e-mail from anywhere because their mail servers are down. It has nothing to do with your SMTP.

    unrouteable mail domain

We get the unrouteable mail domain from use any program that uses sendmail, and that includes neomail, and the address is not on the server. If you send to an address that is on the server, it works. If you send to any other, you get this message and it fails to send.

It begain when we installed the security update for FreeBSD 4.8 and cPanel 9.4.0 on July 17th which cPanel provided. We have two such machines and both have the problem, and both gained the problem in the same way.

It is without doubt a bug that was generated in these updates and has cost us clients. While we have been wotking almost daily on trying to find a solution and have requested help from cPanel, nothing has removed the problem. W:mad:

The error being experienced is due to the fact that the MX records point to an IP address - not a cpanel problem.

    dig MX huixingtrade.com
    ;; ANSWER SECTION:
    huixingtrade.com. 3600 IN MX 0 61.241.93.2.

    dig MX china-inse.com
    ;; ANSWER SECTION:
    china-inse.com. 3600 IN MX 10 211.154.103.93.

    and
    dig MX vip.sina.com
    ;; ANSWER SECTION:
    vip.sina.com. 251 IN MX 10 pop3.vip.sina.com.

seems to have 2 IP's for the MX pop3.vip.sina.com
    ;; QUESTION SECTION:
    ;pop3.vip.sina.com. IN A

    ;; ANSWER SECTION:
    pop3.vip.sina.com. 30 IN A 202.108.35.190
    pop3.vip.sina.com. 30 IN A 202.106.182.160

    # exim -bt anyone@vip.sina.com
    anyone@vip.sina.com
    router = lookuphost, transport = remote_smtp
    host pop3.vip.sina.com [202.106.182.160] MX=10
    host pop3.vip.sina.com [202.108.35.190] MX=10

They both have the same priority.

    Dns troubles :)

The dns provider(s) needs to fix that so that the MX records point to a hostname and that hostname is pointed to the server running their mail - Usually windows server admins make this mistake.

Some MTA's don't fully comply with the RFC's regarding MX records, so some MTA's will send mail to a host with an IP address MX record, however a lot of MTA's will not - To be sure of proper mail routing, MX records should be entered as hostnames.

Contact the provider concerned to correct that and mail will then be routable :)

think this is not the correct track

As stated, the problem occurs for ANY domain not on the server. aol, hotmail, msn, - you name it including client domains on our other servers. The issue is that you get an unroutable domain as discussed. I really doubt aol, earthlink, and others are going to listen to my complaints, and further, I can confirm that the mail never leaves the server.

sam80437 - I was referring to the thread starters post - the domains he listed have issues with their dns and MX records, that is the reason for his problem. Your issue may be different of course but i made no reference to that, sorry if that caused any confusion. :)

I got the same problem, and as stated before, only with programs that use sendmail. There must be some workaround for exim users.

I'm still having the same problem, but I don't have a /etc/eximmailtrap file or folder anywhere on my server.

It looks like my problem is with sendmail only. When I run exim -bt for hotmail:

    Code:
    root@cpanel [/etc]# exim -bt name@hotmail.com
    name@hotmail.com
      router = lookuphost, transport = remote_smtp
      host mx1.hotmail.com [65.54.252.99] MX=5
      host mx1.hotmail.com [65.54.166.99] MX=5
      host mx1.hotmail.com [64.4.50.50] MX=5
      host mx1.hotmail.com [64.4.50.99] MX=5
      host mx3.hotmail.com [65.54.253.99] MX=5
      host mx3.hotmail.com [64.4.50.239] MX=5
      host mx3.hotmail.com [64.4.50.179] MX=5
      host mx3.hotmail.com [65.54.167.5] MX=5
      host mx4.hotmail.com [65.54.190.230] MX=5
      host mx4.hotmail.com [65.54.167.230] MX=5
      host mx4.hotmail.com [65.54.253.230] MX=5
      host mx4.hotmail.com [65.54.190.179] MX=5
      host mx2.hotmail.com [65.54.190.7] MX=5
      host mx2.hotmail.com [65.54.252.230] MX=5
      host mx2.hotmail.com [65.54.166.230] MX=5
      host mx2.hotmail.com [65.54.190.50] MX=5
So all is peachy, but hotmail, aol, yahoo! earthlink, etc. all are still bouncing for me when sending out a newsletter.

    check your logs

Have you bothered to check your exim logs while all this is going on?
    /var/log/exim_paniclog

This usually explains quite a bit. If you have the maximum number of emails per hour set to below the number of emails that you are trying to send out in a mass-mailing then exim is going to just stop resolving the domain names...any domain names...like hotmail.com or aol.com; and dump all those messages back to the sender's account.

It works with sendmail because it lets you send whatever you want without limit; but cPanel uses exim specifically for smtp.

For my FreeBSD 4.8, running latest cpanel release, the following operations seemed to resolve the problem. Was resolved by cPanel.

    1. Rebuild exim

    2. Make a symlink from /usr/local/sbin/exim to /usr/sbin/exim to fix the restart problem. Delete /etc/eximmailtrap to allow webmail to send out mail.

    Hope this helps :)

I have seen A LOT of posts in regards to this problem.

Is there maybe a setting that was flipped when installing. How do you correct the issue. SMTP work fine. Sent 100 e-mails in 2 hours. 100% went through.
    using the sentmail funtion. 0%....

No settings were changed. The security update was applyed. Now This:

    -This is HOTMAIL---
This is what I get when sending out:

This message was created automatically by mail delivery software.

A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its
recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed:

    ***@hotmail.com
    unrouteable mail domain "hotmail.com"

    -This is Comcast.net---
This message was created automatically by mail delivery software.

A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its
recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed:

    ***@comcast.net
    unrouteable mail domain "comcast.net"

    sendmail issue

I think this is a problem with programs that use the sendmail which actually uses exim through a symlink. The Apache update of 6/17 in some OS's did not work well with the link. We have provided a post that seems to work (from cpanel- but it took a month). The program cpanel uses exim which has generated a lot of complaints by many clients. Our previous proprietary servers never had these problems. However, I had a person that spent 4 hours a day checking and updating them. This was a cost that we did not feel we could support in today's market (remaining in business anyway).

That said, since going with cPanel in November 2003, I have had a large client base loss due to server issues. I hope cPanel improves soon. Our reasearch indicated that their capacities were best. However, as a result of the recent problems, we are now testing ensim and plesk server control panels (servers).

BTW (by the way), if you are receiving port errors, a solution may be to use cvsup your ports distribution, remove gmake, and reinstall it from ports. After this, upcp should not be giving these Makefile errors, and is finish without issues, then do the exim recommendations. This fixed the problem on all but one of our FreeBSD, cPanel servers.
