I just set up a new VM using a pre-configured template that included cPanel.

I then ran a cPanel update from within WHM to bring it up to date.

The problem is that the update has been stuck at 30% for about the last hour.

The progress status says "[maintenance] Making sure all needed perl modules are installed : /usr/local/cpanel/install/perlmods... "

and the latest line in the iframe is "gcc-64bit-hack: enabled"

Is this normal or should I try to stop it and start again?

The check perl process has disappeared of it's own accord.

I'm not sure if the update completed or not, so I'll run /scripts/upcp from the command line

    Hello :)

It can sometimes take several minutes for the required Perl modules to update or install. This is normal, and as long as the update completes successfully there is nothing to worry about. You can check the log files in the following location to see if the update completed successfully:

    Code:
    /var/cpanel/updatelogs
    Thank you.

Additionally, please check server resolver configuration from /etc/resolve.conf and ensure that they are correctly setup.
You can set the resolvers through WHM. For more details please refer to WHM Initial Setup
Secondly firewall can block updates sometimes so try disabling/enabling csf firewall. As you are updating cPanel on VM it may possible that it's resources are hitting the limits and that may caused all the running processes got stuck.
