I'm curous as to what cpanel/whm updates? Does it just update itself or does update all the programs as well (such as mySQL, apache, etc)?

It appears it does not update the kernel? Or update the underlying linux flavor (such as updating RH7 to RH9)?

cPanel/WHM updates themselves, various system binaries, MySQL, Exim, Cppop, etc.

cPanel/WHM does NOT update your Apache, PHP or kernel install. Nor will it attempt to upgrade your linux distribution install.

thanks for the answer. Is there a reason why it doesn't update apache and php automatically? Is that for reliability purposes?

Almost every server has a custom Apache & PHP install, so it is better left for the server admin to update this software manually.
