I have been running it on 4.5 with no issues so far.

My question is...how are we supposed to upgrade to CentOS 5...

Hi, today I ran /scripts/rhlupdate and it updated my centos 4.4 to 4.5. Seems that everything is working fine.

4.5 works fine with cpanel ??

    Thanks

CentOS v4.5 works fine with cPanel. It's similar to the RHEv4.5 update that happened some months previously to CentOS catching up.

WRT upgrading to CentOS v5 - it's always recommended that you wipre the OS and install anew when you upgrade between major OS releases. You can, in some cases, upgrade relatively painlessly (see the relevant OS site) but it can just as easily render the server unbootable.

Unless there's a feature of CentOSv5 that you need, there should not be any point in upgrading from CentOS v4 for some years yet since the RHE equivalent version has many years of support in it - that's the whole point of an Enterprise Level OS.

What would be the correct way to upgrade through shell?

    From CentOS v4.4 to v4.5?

    yum update

You can confirm the running version with:

    cat /etc/redhat-release

No from 4.5 to v5...sorry for the confusion.

There are several features in v5 that I am looking for.

Why upgrade from 4.4 to 4.5?

Any pressing reasons to upgrade from CentOS 4.4 to 4.5?

Mainly security/bug fixes. I don't know of anything overwhelmingly important.

No, those programs only use RPMs that come from the same base version (ie 3, 4, 5) unless specifically configured otherwise.

I dont want to upgrade to centos 5. Im saying if I ran /scripts/rhlupdate periodically will only upgrade the same tree I have: 4.x and further 4.x versions.

As chirpy said there is no need to update to 5 for years.
Seems that is the same thing as php 4 and 5. Php is now in 4.4.6 at some moment it will reach the 5.0. The same happens with centos, we should keep it updating the same version tree until it reachs 5.0 naturally.

5.0 version release i think is for people that like to try new stuff.
