What is the best and easiest way to upgrade from one server to another.

    For example:

If I have a P4 3.6 with 1 GB of RAM and a 80 GB drive and I want to upgrade to a Dual 3.0 Xeon with 2 Gb RAM with a 200 GB hard drive.

What is the best way to do this?

Someone said I could just swap drives to the new server but will this work?

If you have physical access to the box, then simply build your box the way you like then mount your old drive to access your backups and migrate over.

If this is at a remote datacenter, they should be more than happy to temporarily mount your drive for you to access what you need.

I would not suggest installing your old drive as a primary in the new system.

here are some excellent posts also
