Hi, not sure if this is the correct forum section for my question, but here goes anyway :)

I have a reseller package, and am trying to figure out a way to be able to upload to my clients websites without needing to know their account password.

    • I tried uploading to their domain, using their username and my own (reseller) password, but this failed due to lack of permissions.
    • I tried uploading to their domain, using my own username and password, but this sent the files to my own website (hosted on the same IP)
    • I tried uploading to my domain using their username and my password, failed on permissions.
    • The only success I have had is using their username and password, but I would like to send them this and tell them to change it so they can access cpanel and for for obvious security reasons.

Is their anyway to retain ftp access to my clients websites from my reseller account without requiring their passwords?

    Thanks :)

    Hello :)

The ability to login to an account using the root or reseller password is controlled from:

"WHM >> Server Configuration >> Tweak Settings"

This is only accessible with "root" access to the server. Thus, you would need to consult with your hosting provider to see if they can enable this ability.

    Thank you.

Thanks for your response Michael, here was my hosts answer..

Would you have any suggestions as to how I can ftp files to clients websites once I have released the cpanel password to them to change?

Why not create an additional ftp user with access to the public_html folder, which you can use for their websites even after you give them access to the main cpanel password.

Yes thanks, this is the suggestion my host also provided later. It does seem to be the best course of action even though it's possible they may edit/delete this ftp user account. But that would be just an annoyance rather than anything serious, so no problem.

But yes - issue resolved, thanks.

Michael, can you tell me where in Tweak Settings is the option to allow the root or reseller user to FTP into an account using the root or reseller password? I'm using the 'search' feature in Tweak settings and can't seem to find it.

I know this is an old thread, but I cannot get the FTP login to work with reseller pass on our test server using the info in this thread. We have not used resellers before, but am trying it out at moment.
It works fine to FTP with account pass and root pass, but not for reseller.

In WHM >> Server Configuration >> Tweak Settings
Accounts that can access a cPanel user account: is set to Root, Account-Owner, and cPanel User default

In WHM >>Service Configuration >> FTP Server Configuration
Allow Logins with Root Password is set to Yes

cPanel login using root pass, reseller pass or account pass all works fine. It is only FTP login that doesn't work.

    Using WHM 11.40.1 (build 9)

Hi Michael and thank you for the quick reply.

So there is no way to login to an accounts FTP for a reseller?
    It only works for root?

Access via FTP with the root password is only allowed because you enabled the "Allow Logins with Root Password" in the FTP configuration. Using the reseller password is not supported, but you are welcome to submit a feature request for this via:

    Thank you.
