I have a client who would like to use the ~/public_html/_vti_pvt/service.pwd frontpage file for purposes of authenticating users. Is it possible to use this file for a password comparison?

I'm operating under the assumptions that:

    a. this file actually contains the hashed cpanel password, and not some other password, and

    b. all he needs to know is the salt used when hashing the password through DES.

Are these assumptions correct? If so, how would one properly compare the entered password with the hash?

    Thanks!
