Could anybody tell me what is /usr/bin/updatedb and what does it do? It seems to be causing very high IO when it is running?

Can it be disabled, if yes, how can it be done?

Thanks for your time and help :)

How long has it been running? The easiest way to kill it would be to login to WHM, click the Load Averages link, top right corner of WHM. Find on the list, updatedb and click the PID to the left of it.

Next page, click Kill Process.

You might want to run the command again from shell as root: updatedb

Running updatedb should take only a short while, a few minutes at most depending on the environment.
