very basic, just trying to understand what cPanel is

I'm a bit out of my league here. I am actaully a graphic designer by day but got a bit of web training in school and am finding out I really enjoy it...sometimes more than GD. I maintain a pretty simple site at wor...html,javascript and occasionally some CGI forms. I have been approched to help a friend out because his "web-guy" just quit showing up.

THIS IS WHERE YOU GIUYS COME IN!

The site my freind is talking about uses cPanel. Can some explain to me very simply what cPanel is/does. The site is carshopinc.com if you want to check it out. Not a complicated site (I don't think anyways) but I don't want to screw the site up. I use GoLive and occasionally Dreamweaver to maintain other sites...can these be used to still to work the frontend of this site. I ask because I see alot of talk about FrontPage on cPanel and am assuming the two programs intergrate?

Simply put CPanel is a backend to the server.
It allows you to setup basic functions on the server such as email, mysql, ftp etc.
It also allows you to manage the web pages that are shown on your website.

You may or may not have all the features listed in the docs depending on what your host has your account setup with.

Hi. Glad you asked the question.

As the other respondent mentioned Dreamweaver and Go Live are for content, CPanel is for stuff the server does - totally different! So most of the the stuff in the documentation is about THAT. Unfortunately for a beginner - such as you and me, as "documentation" it leaves a lot to be desired.

I'M definitely ahead of YOU in the learning curve but not by much. I can tell you that the CPanel documentation doesn't really fully explain A LOT of things...... so you shouldn't feel alone.

Maybe someone will react to this post and tell me (and you) if there's a place to go which will explain some of the terms and functions, and some reasons why you'd use some of the things in the CPAnel Documentation. How 'bout the information in the documentation about (AMONG OTHERS) Box Trapper, Spam Box, Scripts - where why and how you'd use them, etc., etc.

Sure... this MAY be basic stuff but it sometimes appears (at least to an amateur like myself) that the documentation was written for the people that wrote the PREVIOUS version of the documentation, and the one before that, and the one before that, and........

I know somebody might say that "if you're that dumb, you don't belong in this forum," but I AM trainable. HAAAALLLLLLLLPP!
