Web Server Folders

Hi,

Just wondering what all the different web server folders are for?
I know that I have to upload my website to the public_html folder, but what about the other folders?

Specifically, when setting up a mailing list, I've been told: "It is recommended to set it somewhere outside the webroot for security reasons (so that it's files cannot be directly accessed from the web)." Where would this be?

This would be any directory other than ~/public_html/ and ~/www/. Just a reminder that you can create directories in your user directory (~/) if you desire.
