I moved your post to the "E-mail Discussions" section.

What is happening is, anytime a mail message is accessed in any way, even just to read it, it is moved from the new subdirectory in the mailbox directory to the cur subdirectory. Anything in the new subdirectory is considered by a mail client - Webmail or Outlook/Thunderbird/etc. - is considered to be unread, and anything in the cur subdirectory is considered to have been read already. I am not aware of any way to avoid this behavior, but other users may have an idea for this situation.
