From top:

CPU states: 0.8% user, 98.9% system, 0.3% nice, 768330.2% idle

The idle number is obviously just being weird, but what could be causing my server to be using 98.9% of its CPU for system tasks?

Hello

about the idle perc. it happens when the server load is too high

as for the system, It will be helpful if you click SHIFT-p while top is showing the results to sort them by CPU usage. Check for the program which is causing this high load. If its (for instance) Apache, go and check the log files, there must be something ( this goes for any other prog).

A complete copy/paste of top results might be useful so anyone here can help.

Apache will only participate to the user load percentage in top, therefore your suggestion makes no sense.

Sorry but you said nothing about Apache in your previous post. I was giving you an example, just trying to help. The idea was to find out which is making this load.

From what I know, If the log files are too big, this will make the system load goes up. this also happens with errors like: can not kill process XXX ... etc

anyway, good luck and I hope you solve the problem soon, If you haven't yet.
