. . . this causes named to fail. can i increase the amount of allowed sockets to listen on?

i just want to note that as a temporary solution i removed a bunch of ip addresses so that it would not have to listen on more than 500 and it seems to have worked. but i really need to add ip addresses and thus it is a poor crutch that I am using. thanks in advance for your help.

having 500 IP's on a single server is insane!

You will need a massive amount of RAM just to allocate to the IO Buffers for each process that is listening.

Do you need Named to listen on all the IP's? why not only having it listen on IP's that it has to - and this is probably only 3 or 4 if you have everything set up/configured correctly.
