I have used the cPanel subdomain add feature but would like to know what is necessary to add a subdomain from the command prompt.

what steps does it take to create a sub.domain.com and have it create the directory /home/domian/www/sub and everything else necessary to have it show when one goes to http://sub.domain.com

create a DNS entry for your subdomain and point it to some directory on your server.

then create some directory for that subdomain and put some files in there.

    you are done.
