    Hello,
I noticed that this folder has started keeping bunch of files that I don't know what they are. We are on centOs. I can't read them either...

    [/var/log/audit.d]# ls -all
    total 4592884

anyone knows what they are and if it is safe to remove them? They looked kind of fishy to me since some of them had same size...

    Go on, have a guess
That would be the output from laus which you most likely do not need or use. I would suggest that you simply:

    rpm -e laus
    rm -Rf /var/log/audit.d

The laus package is known to cause instability on cPanel servers too (unusual reboots) and is probably best removed anyway.
