    What is tcpdump used for?

Can you give me a practical use for it in the webhosting industry?

    Go on, have a guess
It's used for dumping TCP packet headers ;) One example where I've used it in the past is to track exactly what certain IP addresses have tried to do to a nameserver. It's very low level stuff, but can be invaluable to understanding TCP traffic coming into your server, and your servers reaction to it.
