what is this line in crontab

    at the end of of crontab file i found this line:

    "/tmp/crontab.XXXXk2ABcX" 8L, 386C

    what is it?

    If you are using vi, that's the output that tells how many lines and characters the file in "" has. It is not part of the file itself.

    how can I tell if am using vi or another editor?

    i tried crontab -e to open the file but i couldnt edit the file or even exit from the file using Ctrl+x

    When you press 'i' does it say --INSERT-- at the bottom of the screen? 99% chance it is vi and not part of the file. You could always cat the file to see the file contents as well.
