I haven't had any problems with proftpd until I upgraded to 8.4.x about two weeks ago. I'm running FreeBSD 4.7 and for some reason, proftpd shuts down and sometimes doesn't start. It is also running an extremly high load up on the server and won't restart and kill the processes. This is like the 15th time this has happened the past 2 weeks. Here's the current load on the server:

    Code:
    last pid: 9199; load averages: 62.45, 45.45, 25.51
    288 processes: 56 running, 221 sleeping, 9 stopped, 2 zombie
    CPU states: 95.6% user, 0.0% nice, 3.9% system, 0.5% interrupt, 0.0% idle
    Mem: 780M Active, 783M Inact, 329M Wired, 67M Cache, 199M Buf, 52M Free
    Swap: 4001M Total, 76K Used, 4001M Free

A cpanel tech upgraded proftpd to the latest 1.2.8 version that is available in the FreeBSD ports to try and fix this problem but it didn't help.

Will you guys please add support for Pure-FTP for FreeBSD? I'm running it on another FreeBSD server that doesn't have cPanel on it and it works awesome.

I ended up getting proftpd to finally stop then the load went down to around 2 and it started to shoot back up to around 50 again.

Webmail has also just failed (which is the first time I've seen this happen), which I'm guessing is due to the proftpd problems.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. This damn POS proftpd is ruining my server!!!!!!!

It turns out the load problems were caused by some jerk off from Germany who was trying to guess random username/passwords to access FTP and Webmail. Here's his info in case anybody wants to block him from your server:

    pD9535D81.dip.t-dialin.net [217.83.93.129]

I also contacted his ISP so he should be shut down soon.
