What sort of mail volumes can exim reasonably handle?

Obviously the answer to this question partially includes the 'grunt' and load of the server upon which exim is running, but... is there a general, recommended 'safe' or efficient limit for the number of email message you can throw at exim for it to send?

I ask because we're experimenting with sending out 30,000 emails to subscribers to a website, where the bulk email software we're using (12all) defaults to throwing email messages in batches of 40 at exim, with 3 second pauses between each batch.

fyi: the queue on the server hit nearly 9,000 messages (out of 30,000) as undelivered *after* our bulk email software had reported finishing it's send, and now it appears that exim is slowly chugging through that list now.

    Comments/opinions anyone?

    Thanks.
