A couple of hours ago a customer called me and told me he was getting the license expired message on one of our servers when going into webmail or cpanel. Sure enough I was getting it to and got it going into WHM. I went to the verify website and it shows its active (softlayer dedicated server) and so I ran cpkeyclt and right after that everything seems fine, whm/cpanel/webmail all working.

What I was wondering is what would cause this to happen in the middle of the day?. I checked that server twice this morning and had no calls until later.

I poked around the machine and looked in the usual file areas and didnt see anything weird. Nothing unusual running, nothing extra in "last" command, nothing in various temp file areas. Ftp logs shows nothing weird nor anything with ssh, ssh keys normal, group users normal, no weird new users in passwd, all services are up.

So does anyone have an idea why this would happen. Also is there any log or trace or something to show me when this "expiration" happened or how I can check any other log to see "refusals" to run functions due to the key being expired. I'm mostly interested in finding the point it failed and if possible why.

Its a Centos 5 box with the very latest cpanel current (updated yesterday morning manually). Disk space is fine, load is light and less that 30% memory usage.

Any ideas or tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Did you check /usr/local/cpanel/logs/license_log ?

Yes, not sure what I am looking for, this is the last couple of days. At the bottom is a 10:46 time which is when I ran cpkeyclt:

thats it. I am guessing sometime between the 8:41 and my run of cpkeyclt something died?. I just cant tell if thats exactly
the time frame, but the 10:46 should be me doing it manually.

Did you save the exact error message from the license expired page?

No and I am kicking myself for it. I thought it was just a generic error page, I didnt know it was dynamic for the error produced.

Got the same issue on 3 servers (at random) so far. Which all where unfortunately spotted by customers. This started at 11.28 release, but even when all servers are running 11.28 we found another 2 servers with this issue already.

After running the license key check, it is fixed; but its very anoying, wondering if more people have this issue as we dont seem to get much further with cpanel support as they say our log files dont show any issue, this while our customers and we do see there is an issue.

I've seen the same issues myself, it's happened a couple of times in the past randomly and I always chocked it up to a connection issue at that point in time or maybe the licensing server being busy/down but since moving to 11.28 I've seen it happen to a few servers randomly for no apparent good reason.

I'm more than happy to provide logs to whoever wants to see them, just let me know which file to cat :)

It is normal for the license screen to appear for a few minutes during the update as it is installing the new binaries (they require a new license version).

If the issue persists through the install please do open a ticket with a copy of /usr/local/cpanel/logs/license_log.

    Thanks

When we've seen the issue it persisted beyond the upgrade and we had to log in and run the license update manually. I've always had to apologize with "Sorry that cPanel did that - the license is valid but for some reason it didn't update properly."

It ends up making us look bad, as though we're not paying our bills or something.

Please do open a ticket with a copy of the license_log when that happens. If you know the exact time it happened in the past the license_log might still be useful today even if the event occurred a long time ago.

It just now happened on a production server, all I did was run /scripts/upcp --force

    http://www.screen-shot.net/2010-11-22_2335.png

A cpkeyclt seems to have resolved it:
    Code:
    root@echo [~]# /usr/local/cpanel/cpkeyclt
    Updating cPanel license...Done. Update succeeded.
    Building global cache for cpanel...Done
    Here's the log file:
    Code:
    root@echo [~]# /usr/local/cpanel/cpkeyclt
    Updating cPanel license...Done. Update succeeded.
    Building global cache for cpanel...Done
    root@echo [~]# tail -n 50 /usr/local/cpanel/logs/license_log

The issue happens when the cPanel update process is run.

I can confirm we're seeing this too. Details from last server to do it overnight.
