Everytime I try to update cpanel to the current version, it stops working on the "updating ftp server" part.

Would you be able to try running this in root SSH instead to see the results?

Code:
/scripts/upcp --force
You might want to run an strace on the process while running it instead (although this is going to create a large strace so change from /root to a larger partition if /root is not very big):

Code:
strace -vvf -s 4096 -o /root/strace.upcp /scripts/upcp
Once it hits the section where FTP server is not updating, you would then want to check the end of the strace at /root/strace.upcp (or wherever you placed it) to see what it shows. If you need help understanding the strace or performing these tasks, please open a ticket at WHM > Support Center > Contact cPanel or using the link in my signature.

Thanks.
