    Greetings!

I just did rent a virtual private server that is using Cpanel/WHM for administration. Now the prob I have is kinda rather "overall" ;):

I never worked so far with virtual private servers, but only used usual reseller accounts with WHM/Cpanel so far. Now I do know jack about server administration but I was kinda forced to switch to virtual private server hosting for I need for a project of mine some settings in mySQL that I were not able to set in common reseller hosting...

So here is some basic questions I have:

    1) Does there exist anywhere a site where there is probably some basis guide on how to setup one´s VPS using WHM?

    2) I tried to setup by intuition and appearantly did do some errors, so I wonder wether there exists somewhere in WHM some option to reset to default values (like making everything undone I done so far) :)

    3) How would I setup some nameservers on the VPS? Would I e.g. redirect a domain by A entries and MX entries to the IP my server has and then do some adjustement in WHM making this domain my nameserver like ns1.domain.tld, ns2.domain.tld?

    4) Does there exist some standart way how to access the root folder and have a look on the filesystem e.g. through FTP? e.g. like WHM-username = ftp-username and same for password? I mean I tried that already, but doesn´t work, but probably there is some different standart way? :)

Thx in advance for your replies and sorry for my little knowledge about all that stuff.
    best regards, dnagency.

    Hi dnagency,

I have several VPS servers and admin one dedicated server. Don't think of it as a "VPS" Server, it's just really another Linux server, you admin a VPS server very similar to a full dedicated server (apart from all the host company initial install stuff which should not be a concern to you). By the way I tried DirectAdmin Control Panel for a while, but came back to Cpanel as it automaticlly handles updating server software such as Apache, PHP, etc.

After forums.cpanel.net this is the next best forum for Cpanel/WHM (ignore the posts for non-Cpanel servers.)

    Other helpful sites:

To log in your server you need to use ssh2 (the 2 makes it more secure), you don't admin a server through ftp as you are transmitting your password in the clear.

I use Vandyke for my ssh2 utilities (free 30 day download):
    SecureFX and SecureCRT
    Bundle $115

There is a free SSH utility call Putty and many others from $30-100.

And the best search utility for finding answers is:
