Here is a snipit of the mail directory on one of my WHM/cpanel accounts:

    drwxr-x--- 2 tow mail 4096 Apr 26 09:27 electric_inspector/
    drwxr-x--- 2 tow mail 4096 Apr 16 14:31 fire_inspector/

    drwxr-x--- 2 tow mail 4096 Apr 16 14:27 sandyb/
    -rw-rw---- 1 tow mail 0 Apr 20 08:13 saved-messages
    -rw-rw---- 1 tow mail 0 Apr 20 08:13 sent-mail
    drwxr-x--- 2 tow mail 4096 Apr 16 14:27 sheriff/
    drwxr-xr-x 27 tow mail 4096 Jun 22 13:06 wheatfield.ny.us/
    root@host [/home/tow/mail]#

Can anyone tell me whose account the 'inbox' above belongs to and how does mail get there?

That's the default (username@domain.com) inbox. It's likely that all unrouted email is set to go there.

I knew you would say that.

    (1) the domain for this account is 'wheatfield.ny.us' and the account user name is 'tow'. So is the account login tow@wheatfield.ny.us? I have tried everything imaginable to download the mail from this inbox and I have had no success.

    (2) if you say this is where all unrouted mail ends up then why does :fail: response... not work on the default e-mail?

    2 possibilities.

To access the default mail box with a POP program, you connect to mail.domain.com and the username would be just tow, not the full email address.

    or

Is there also an inbox file the same size in the wheatfield.ny.us directory? Normally there should be. All emails are in
    /home/username/mail/[mailfile]
    and
    /home/username/mail/[domain]/[mailfile]

It's not actually 2 seperate files. They are hardlinked files, normally, but sometimes this does get messed up, mainly due to changes in how the mail system works.

Thanks squirrel, the user name for my Outlook was 'tow' and not 'tow@...'

There was a ton of mail to be downloaded.

A couple of Q's for you (as you are obviously on the ball and well versed in WHM -- I was looking at your scripts while you replied to this post).

Q1) how does mail get to the 'tow inbox' in the first place? I have a :fail: replyMessage... defined. I thought that the :fail: feature precluded messages from getting through.

Q2) I have posted another thread to cPanel and WHM here on this forum and you answered them in part of your reply above. When you say that the 2 inboxes are hardlinked and they should be in sync with each other, they are not on my 'wheatfield.ny.us' account, in fact they are way out of whack. Why might that be and what can I do to rectify and prevent it in the future?

Most likely mail that got there before it was set to fail.

This is usually cpanel upgrades. The way the mail system works has been changed a few times and sometimes it causes that to happen. Hard to prevent. Just keep cpanel reasonably up to date.

I don't know...I have had the fail instruction posted since account inception 4 months ago. In fact, I just downloaded 76 garbage messages as a result of your instructions. I just now SSH'd back on the server and look:

    drwxr-x--- 2 tow mail 4096 Apr 16 14:18 gov/
    -rw-rw---- 1 tow tow 2586 Jun 23 10:25 inbox
    -rw-rw---- 1 tow mail 504 May 19 06:25 INBOX.Drafts
    -rw-rw---- 1 tow mail 504 May 19 06:25 INBOX.Sent
    -rw-rw---- 1 tow mail 546 May 19 06:28 INBOX.Trash
    drwxr-x--- 2 tow mail 4096 Apr 16 14:20 jacquea/

'inbox' now has 2K of mail. What's up with that I wonder (outloud)?

As for the hardlinking being out of whack I am set to Automatic/Current Release for cPanel (I am running WHM 9.4.0 cPanel 9.4.1-C53).

My mail is behaving very strangely and annoyingly. It is causing me to want to monitor it daily so it does not run away on me -- but who has that kind of time?

There are new options in WHW Tweak Settings in regards to this, that may benefit you - I suggest you look in their.

    Thanks icanectc.

Are you referring to the :fail: feature, the hardlinking or both?

Also, can you point me in the right direction on the Tweak Settings? I just logged on to WHM and clicked the Tweak Settings under Server Setup and cannot readily identify anything that might be of assistance per your suggestion.

    Thanks again :)
