Why do I need to change folder permissions 777 on the folder then install zencart

I installed zencart on other hosts(eg.bluehost hostmonster etc.) do not need to change folder permissions(755)
why do I need to change the permissions 777 on the folder in my vps then install zencart?
ps. Suexec have turned on

Is your VPS running php as dso ? As long as your VPS running php as cgi or suphp you should not be required to change the permissions to 777. You can check the configuration from Apache Configuration link in WHM or you can ask your provider to check it and setup suphp on your VPS.

then I need rebuild apache with suphp,and alter php handler configureation with cgi or suphp, Do I need turn off suecec?
then do I change folder permissions from 777 to 775?

Yes, rebuild Apache with SuPHP and then enable it from the Command line OR WHM >> Server Configuration. Once done, you have to change 777 permissions to 755 of all the files/directories.

BTW, there is no need to turn off Apache Suexec.
