When a visitor of my site goes to https://mydomain.com/wp-login.php?action=lostpassword the person types in their username or email and they get this message :

Error: The email could not be sent. Your site may not be correctly configured to send emails. Get support for resetting your password.

I did troubleshoot it with a clean version it seems to work with a clean version of the options table but i am wanting to get it fixed on my actual website backup

Hey there! Since a clean installation of WordPress functions properly, there is likely a customization inside that particular instance causing the issue. This could be a setting or a plugin.

The easiest thing to check would be to temporarily rename the plugins directory to plugins.bak, so it can't be read by the system, and then see if the email tool works properly. If not, I would confirm that email in cPanel itself works fine for that account.

I also always recommend that people have authenticated email being sent from WordPress, and they have a tool at WP Mail SMTP by WPForms – The Most Popular SMTP and Email Log Plugin that can help with this.

cPanel doesn't control the WordPress settings, so if the above doesn't work and you don't find anything in the error logs, you may need to reach out to WordPress support directly to see if they have any additional ideas.
