Some HTML files on this server are identifying themselves to the web browser as having the x-server-parsed-html content type, and the browsers are trying to download the html file instead of render it on the screen. How do I fix this? I cannot find the phrase "x-server-parsed-html" in the files themselves, in any .htaccess files, or in the apache conf file. Where else can I look for the origin of this problem?

I've only seen that when there was a directive in a .htaccess file within the tree. Make sure to check for a .htaccess file from the top partition down, i.e. / then /home then /home/account/ then /home/account/public_html/ etc.
