This release is an Alpha release. It is a limited preview of the x4 project. We do not recommend using this on production servers or for real end users.

Whats Included:

  • x4 Home Page
    • Plugin installer/uninstaller.
    • New look and feel.
    • Improved Search.
    • Improved News.
    • Improved Frequently Access Areas.
    • Wide Screen and Mobile layout support.
  • Change Password

Technology Changes:

  • YUI 3 - Replacing YUI 2 in x3 with YUI 3 in x4.
  • CJT 2.0 - Reorganized cPanel JavaScript library. Will be modeled on YUI3. Will be fully documented.
  • Dynamic Combo Loader - To support YUI3 style loading and combining. Will be available to third party developers too.

Anticipated Release:

Updated! Mid Feb. 2013.

Prerequisites:

  1. May only be installed on 11.35 or later.
  2. The theme will only be available to accounts that have been granted permission to use it.

question about 2. The theme will only be available to accounts that have been granted permission to use it.

Does that mean like limited cpanel/whm users can only get alpha access to x4? or does it mean x4 will be available to anyone with 11.35 and up but only to the accounts that server owner has assigned x4 theme to will have x4 access? if so then i understood that one right :)

The server owner or reseller must either set the account to use x4 or grant the account the try X4 feature in a feature list.

During the APLHA phase of development, we do not recommend you grant this right to real users. The ALPHA phase is not suitable for real users yet and this first release will have almost no functionality so if you just set users to use it, they won't be able to manage their cpanel account effectively. APLHA is just a preview peek into the development stage for x4.

okay is it today the x4 alpha will be released?
I apologize for the delay.

The first release will be out in a few weeks. The development team needed another sprint to finish up the home page and change password changes. The updated estimate for the first release is now Feb 22. We may have a development version up on the demo server before than, but the plugin will not be available until the 22nd.

what a bummer, well at least they get more time on them to make sure most of issues are gone for the alpha release :)

We have created a public demo server for you to test-drive the new x4 Theme!

Similar to the public demo servers for the standard cPanel product, you can come log in to https://x4demo.cpanel.net:2083 and explore the current state of the x4 Theme. While most of the cPanel features have not yet received their redesign and are not "up and running", we'd love to have you come take a look at the overall look and feel of the x4 Theme, and try out some of the new functionality, like:

• The improved Filter function
• Updated controls for the "sea of icons" - quickly collapse or expand your interface, switch from grid to list view, and show/hide icons
• Updated layout - to better support a range of display sizes from the desktop to mobile, the layout starts in 3 columns and will reflow to work with your display
• Mobile support - we've worked to greatly improve the cPanel home page experience in mobile browsers

Please come and try it out - sign in with user 'x4user' and password 'demo$123'. Once you've had a look around, please visit the x4 forums and tell us what you think!

Remember, that's https://x4demo.cpanel.net:2083, x4user/demo$123. We hope to see you soon!

NOTE: The first version on the demo server is an incomplete developer build of the first ALPHA. We will update the demo more frequently than we release the plugin. The next update for the demo will be on Friday when the first plugin release is available.

What is in the DEMO:
Home page changes for x4.

What's not in the DEMO yet:
Change Password page. (ETA: Friday 03/01/2013)

Please feel free to start looking at the home page changes and give feedback.

Excellent Work! Can't wait to see the other screens with this new UI.
Thanks.

We are trying really hard to make this a world class theme.

We will be making frequent release over the next few months as we start to update additional screens and add other features.

I can't load the demo, because SSL is enabled on a non-standard port (my ISP goes a bit mental when that happens). Please could you disable SSL?

Or even better, allow access from the cpanel subdomain.
That's a standard port for cPanel. How do you connect via your own cPanel, non SSL only?

Due to the nature of this Alpha release I would think disabling SSL is not an option at this time.

Sounds great, Tom. Do you guys have any ETA or timeline to complete the full redesign of the entire UI? Can we expect to have it enabled in some moment within 2013?

Due to the large nature of the expected change set, we are not making any predictions for when x4 will be integrated in the product. Over the course of the next few months we hope to take x4 from ALPHA to BETA. My conception of when we cross to BETA is when enough of the key applications are ported that you don't have to rely on x3 to get your common tasks done. We won't move out of BETA until all the applications are ported from x3 to x4. I will keep you updated on this forum with our progress.

so when will this x4 plugin & theme be available in cpanel plugin area? since i still dont see any yet :(
The plugin will be available for download next week. It will not appear in the WHM plugin installer for a few releases however.

If you want to take a look at what will be in the plugin, you can look at the demo site we put up. Its updated with today's changes.

We pushed an update to the demo server with the following fixes:

- Updated version numbers system to support the standard cpanel 4 section version.
- Fixed a bug that was causing breakage when switching from x3 to x4 with a non-root style/branding.
- Fixed a bug that was causing breakage when switching themes via the Reseller Toolbox when in x4.

We anticipate releasing the downloadable plugin later today.
