Zip and download mail folders to read offline

Client's hosting account was suspended due to massive malware attack. He would like access to all emails from his two accounts from before the attack. I have zipped each account's folder in the File Manager and assume I can download them and he can unzip on his computer to read emails offline. Is that the case and if so, what program does he use to read the email files?

I have transferred his domain and site files to a new host that also uses cPanel. Would it be easier/more practical to migrate mail files from one cPanel to the other?

Yes. Reading email downloaded via File Manager from the account is not as easy to read as it is in an email Client.
