It appears recently that php is being built with Zend thread safety. Is this php build directive new in Cpanel? I've just noticed recently on more and more cpanel machines and I'm curious as to when it was started, and if there is a configuration variable to turn it off or on.

Was this documented in a cpanel changelog anywhere? I must have missed it :\

If you build PHP with Apache 2.2 or with 2.0 with worker MPM it will build PHP with zts because of the Apache module cPanel makes.

It is because in both those cases you're using a threaded web server. Thus you need a thread safe version of PHP. Since cPanel builds the System, DSO, CGI ect. ect. it does this even if you're not using the Apache module in the end.
